Advisory Workshop. |
Next Steps
In April 2019 Nipmuc hosted a Lead Learner Workshop to explore the future of advisory at our school. Working together, students and teachers identified the key aspects of our program, connected the program to our beliefs about learning, reviewed survey data about advisory, and made some recommendations. As we begin the 2019-2020 school year, we will use that work as a starting point to lead the development of advisory.
In today's workshop, we will:

The "Why" of Advisory
A key part of last year's work was to determine the driving purpose of advisory and how it connected to our beliefs about learning. Based on the feedback, we have pulled out four key goal areas:
What additional goal areas (if any) are we missing?
- Building Relationships and Connections
- Supporting Academics
- Personal Growth & Wellness
- Future Planning

Check out the brainstorming from the workshop of what is currently happening in advisory programming to meet these goals:
Advisory Feedback & Possible Solutions
Included below are some feedback areas and possible solutions that resulted from last year's Lead Learner Workshop focused on advisory.
- Time for Housekeeping/Class Meetings - Schedule class meetings at least 1X per year (more if needed). Class advisors will be consulted about time needs.
- Time for kids to complete work - Hold study time one time per term (approximately middle of term) during advisory, allowing advisers to check-in with students in one-to-one check-ins
- School-wide “flex block” - Use advisory as a “flex block” once per term (towards end of term) - allowing time to get extra help, meet with teachers, and/or take part in clubs/activities that interest them. (through use of Sched.com)
- More emphasis on wellness - Work with Pat, Steve, Leslie, and school counselors to design some additional approaches to wellness programming.
Understanding the Advisory Schedule
In order to improve advisory, we need an understanding of the schedule used to organize sessions at each grade level over the course of the year. Included below is an outline of the schedule to be used as a starting point in building advisory for this school year.
Exploring the Advisory Suggestions
Breaking into three or four groups, review the feedback and the suggested solutions. Working collaboratively, complete the following prompts. Feel free to add as many answers as you wish.
- In order to do this well, we need to…
- We can make this awesome if we…
- A potential mistake we should avoid is…
