Collectively, American students spend 1.9 billion hours per week... on school work that is thrown away at the end of the week." - HadaNou Collective
Making our Mission a Reality through Real Work That Matters
One of the core themes of Nipmuc's strategic planning is a shared belief in creating learning experiences that answer the questions "Why are we learning this?" and "How will I use this in the real world?". Students, educators, and community members all agree that one of the key ingredients for creating powerful moments of learning is relevance to the world beyond our school. These moments of learning are impactful not only because they show the relevance of the curriculum but also because they empower students to explore their curiosity, make an impact on their community, and build a connection between the curriculum and their futures. |

Characteristics of Community Partnership Projects
Community Partnership Projects help students and teachers to find opportunities to engage in real work that has relevance in the world beyond our classrooms. They are:
-opportunities to explore the curriculum through real-world learning experiences. -mutually beneficial to students and community partners. -more than community service opportunities. -often interdisciplinary in nature. |

Building a Community Partnership Project
As a school community, we recognize the value of creating opportunities for "real work that matters" in the world beyond our campus. Despite that, creating learning experiences that connect to the curriculum, have benefit to students, and make an impact on the community is a challenging task. Designing these types of learning experiences requires that we take on the difficult work of breaking away from past practice in order to see the community as our classroom.
In today's meeting we'll work together as a community of learners to develop model Community Partnership Projects. Our goal is to support students and teachers in taking actionable steps in embracing "real work that matters" as a key part of learning at Nipmuc.
Included below are template documents for each academic discipline. Working with your groups of students, educators, and community partners, use the lesson template to collaboratively build our first community partnership projects.
