The Legacy Program: The Design Process in Action
The Legacy Course is the third iteration of a project-based student-driven learning experience at Nipmuc Regional High School. By testing new ideas, getting feedback from students & teachers, and making adjustments to the course through collaborative design, the course is now in its third phase of redesign. Take a look at how it has evolved over the years.
In today's workshop, Mr. Merten, Ms. Ramsey, and our Legacy students will help us to explore the program, answer their questions, and provide feedback to help the course continue to grow.
To kick off the workshop, participants were asked to brainstorm all the things that they would want to learn about given time and resources. Check out their responses below.

GENERATION THINKThe first year (2017-18) the course was called Generation Think. In this elective course, students worked during one period and with one teacher on passion-based projects. These students created websites and participated in student learning conferences in order to showcase their learning.

INTEREST, INQUIRY & INNOVATIONSDuring the 2018 - 2019 school year, students took the course for 3 consecutive periods with a rotation of four teachers. Students engaged in passion project-based learning, more structured design processes, and content learning in the areas of science, history, and English. Students created a public museum exhibit to showcase their learning, created websites, and displayed their work for the public during Fine Arts Festival at Nipmuc.

LEGACYDuring the 2019 - 2020 school year, students participate in the course during 1 or 2 consecutive blocks. The course has also added a community service component in which students, through their passion projects, will spend time making an impact on their local community. Legacy helps students to tap into their interests in order to make an impact on their community.
